CHRISTOPHER BOWEN OAM

Christopher Bowen is one of Australia's most prolific composers and versatile musicians. He was born in Melbourne and after completing studies at Melbourne University he gained admission to Vienna's Konservatorium der Stadt Wein, where he studied conducting under Reinhard Schwarz and Georg Mark. He also participated in master classes directed by Gennadij Roschdestwenskij and Herbert von Karajan. Whilst in Vienna he conducted concerts with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and was Guest Music Director at the Stadttheater Skt. Poelten.

Christopher has been a staff member of the Vienna and Sydney Conservatoriums and has worked with the Victorian State Opera and Opera Australia. Since his return to Australia he has conducted numerous choirs and orchestras and is currently the Music Director of the Sydney University Graduate Choir and the Central Coast Chorale. Christopher is a Fellow of Sydney University and his awards include the Stephen Lardner Memorial Award for excellence in adult education.

His repertoire embraces the major orchestral and choral works from the 16th century to contemporary music. His considerable body of composition comprises orchestral and choral works, instrumental and chamber music and works for the stage. His compositions and arrangements have received critical and public acclaim and have been broadcast on the ABC and the ORF (Austrian Radio). He has released several CD's of his works, including a recording in 1997 by the Australian National Orchestra and four CDs with the Central Coast Chorale.

Christopher Bowen, was the recipient of an Order of Australia Medal in January 2009 for his service to music as a composer, conductor and director, particularly through the Sydney University Graduate Choir over the past 15 years, and for his contribution to music education.
